Blurb (from goodreads):

After her mother dies in an accident, sixteen-year-old Bree Matthews wants nothing to do with her family memories or childhood home. A residential program for bright high schoolers at UNC–Chapel Hill seems like the perfect escape—until Bree witnesses a magical attack her very first night on campus.

A flying demon feeding on human energies.

A secret society of so called “Legendborn” students that hunt the creatures down.

And a mysterious teenage mage who calls himself a “Merlin” and who attempts—and fails—to wipe Bree’s memory of everything she saw.

The mage’s failure unlocks Bree’s own unique magic and a buried memory with a hidden connection: the night her mother died, another Merlin was at the hospital. Now that Bree knows there’s more to her mother’s death than what’s on the police report, she’ll do whatever it takes to find out the truth, even if that means infiltrating the Legendborn as one of their initiates.

She recruits Nick, a self-exiled Legendborn with his own grudge against the group, and their reluctant partnership pulls them deeper into the society’s secrets—and closer to each other. But when the Legendborn reveal themselves as the descendants of King Arthur’s knights and explain that a magical war is coming, Bree has to decide how far she’ll go for the truth and whether she should use her magic to take the society down—or join the fight.

My Scores:

Writing Style: Solid

I often watch Regan on her PeruseProject YouTube channel and she had this book on one of her wrap-up videos. She got me so excited about it that I immediately used my monthly audible credit to get it. So worth it!

The writing style is so interesting to me because there’s so much feeling to it. The writer’s level emotional intelligence must be astoundingly high to produce a work that is so full of body language and raw emotion.

Characters: Absolutely Amazing

I loved getting to know the characters in this novel! They are so well crafted that it was easy making an emotional attachment to each of them. There is so much detail given to their perspectives, motivations, and body language that they felt real, like you could just reach out and touch them.

I hope that this novel becomes phenomenally successful because I feel that there’s a lot that we can learn from these characters about love and loss, about race and gender, and about courage and resilience.

Plot: Absolute Page-Tuner

The twists and turns in this novel were really enthralling because each unveiling of new information not only changed the character’s future but their view of the past as well.

I can only imagine the amount of planning and thought that went into the plot of this novel because each development was so intricately tied to each character in different ways. Even though I figured out a few things before they happened, it was still engaging to read because of how much of an impact it made on the characters.

Overall: Totally Obsessed

Everything about this novel is awesome! First off, it’s a King Arthur retailing and it’s about time it got such an original revamp! Second, the characters touch on so many important topics: grief, love, race, and resilience. Lastly, the emotional intelligence of the writing style takes the plot to a whole other level!

I’m excited to see where this series goes and can only pray it makes a positive impact on this messed up world of ours.
